Should You Move an Oversized Load Yourself or Get Some Help?

In your line of business, you may be called upon now and again to move a significant load from one place to another. If the load is particularly large, you have a lot on your plate and with this comes a good degree of responsibility. Heavy haulage companies do this on a regular basis, but you may be nevertheless thinking how to do it yourself. What do you need to know in these situations?

Plan

The first rule of thumb is to ensure that you have adequately planned for every eventuality. It doesn't matter whether you are hauling objects in the construction industry, dangerous goods of some kind, pressurised vessels or simply a large load, planning is paramount.

Get Permission

What time of day are you going to move this load? Could this have an impact on other road users, or could you be delayed by traffic issues? In most situations, you will have to get permission from the relevant authorities and a number of departments could be involved. Don't underestimate the time it will take to process this. These individuals will undoubtedly want to look at your documentation and may want to satisfy themselves that you are capable of doing the job.

Understand Transport

Do you have the right type of equipment to get this done properly? Usually, a standard trailer is not sufficient as it may not be able to cope with the dimensions and weight. If you get extendable trailers, you may have to upgrade your towing vehicle, as well.

Know Your Drivers' Ability

The next thing to consider is the skill of your drivers. Threading an oversized load through narrow streets may be beyond the ability of your current staff. In this case, you will have to put them through a training course and this will require a certain amount of time and added cost.

Tie Down

Who is going to be responsible for securing the load at all stages of the journey? The right type of restraints have to be purchased and used correctly. Traditional methods of securing loads may not be sufficient, and you need to do proper research ahead of time.

Ask the Experts

As you can see, there's a lot of responsibility associated with this type of movement. Heavy haulage companies do this on a regular basis and can take a lot of the stress away from you. Get in touch with them for advice before you proceed.
